Statue dedicated to the traveller. Oviedo, Spain.

Travel is the change in location of people on a trip, or the process of time involved in a person or object moving from one location to another. Reasons for travel include:

  • Tourism—travel for recreation. This may apply to the travel itself or the travel may just be the necessary investment to arrive at a desired location.
  • Visiting friends and family
  • Trade
  • Commuting

The word originates from the Middle English word travailen ("to toil"), which comes from the French word travailler ("travail").

Midnight Rose asked: "i want to travel somewhere with my mom sometime soon. where should we go? i have no clue where to start. we need some place thats not going to cost alot, but is alot of fun!"

Samantha replied: "Find the nearest train station that's interstate.Start looking around on the internet for interesting places to see, or stop at. Trains are a hell of a lot cheaper than driving a car, what with gas a parking...If you want to do international, to EF,.They have the best trips, and the best prices hands down.I've traveled with them, and am in the future."
[ºKaЯLiTaº] replied: "i'll recomend you Europe or maybe Egipt but no matter where you go...it always going to be expensive...but good luck"
trav'ler replied: "maybe if you could give some idea of where you are starting from -- I assume the US -- but distance affects travel costs, so it would be easier to give you some suggestions if we knew if you were East coast, south east, northwest etcand give an idea of your budget -- 'cost alot' can be a few hundred to a few thousand or more. so let us know if we should be looking for bus trips or international cruises :-)To get some ideas for women's travel, I like journeywoman.com"
Monkeyboots92 replied: "get on a plane and go to vegas or new york city."
dreamer replied: "catalina island is reeally fun! i went there one and ifelt like i was on clouds. it was comfortable becuase everyone was in bathing suits:] the restuarants there were also cute and pretty. the view was the best though. it depends on where u live. if u live in CA or anywhere there, it will be cheap because u go on a boat and it takes u there...but if u live on the other side of america, it will cost a lot to go toCA and then to boat...i hope i helped! good luck"
bansko replied: "I offer you a winter heaven in my country Bulgaria. It is small town called Bansko. It's best for skiing."
Kal H asked: "I do know someone who has the same ability who travels back and forth to Japan to teach English. I also have thought of import/export, though I don't know much about it. Being an antiques scout/buyer was suggested to me. I doubt I could compete in the photoessay/travel writer category. Do you have any ideas? Thanks. No, I'm not an airline employee, and no, I'm not suggesting trying to transfer my pass. Please read my description before replying."

flyer74422 replied: "You can't. I assume you have an employee pass. In this day and age ID's are thoroughly checked so no one else could use your pass."
Mr. T's Pretty Cuzzin replied: "You can't. There was a time when a very minute number of passengers could standby--as a pre-approved courier--on a few select and rare international flights for very low prices, but since 9-11, those days are gone....Baggage allowances are so low, and excess baggage fees so high, that couriering your own goods seems like a difficult way to make some cash--unless you're importing something like rare feathers, for example.Keep in mind that if your travel is for work, and you actually perform work in another country, you might well be liable for tax on income earned there--further complicating the idea.Have you considered going with older people who might need some assistance while travelling? Just an idea."
Mxsmanic replied: "I think that if you read the fine print in whatever agreement gives you standby flight privilege, you'll find serious limitations on how and for what purpose you can use that privilege.Additionally, there are zillions of other legal ramifications that you'd have to be aware of—being able to fly for free is in fact almost insignificant compared to these other considerations, if you want to do things legally."
phil replied: "I don't know if you're flying on an employee's privileges, but if you are...It's against the rules of pass travel to use standby flights for business purposes. The employee could lose their benefits if the wrong people found out.By the way, cigarettes are getting very expensive in the USA and Canada. I was in St. Maarten recenly and they cost about $1 per pack. In Canada $9.50."
Kiki asked: "I want to work for travel channel, it must be my job to travel the world. Im studying film directing and taking photography courses. How and where do you think i should get a job that will allow me to travel? Thanks a mil..."

screwdriver replied: "Most of the world has already been photographed ad nauseum so there are already millions of pictures out there. Yours have to be different. It can be because of things that are happening, news events etc. It could be because you have some specialist knowledge in another field such as birds, animals or plants hydro electric schemes, oil exploration, humanities etc. Yes an eclectic mix, but it's your specialist knowledge that's important, not your photographic skills, though they have to be high too.Look at the articles in National Geographic they all have some theme other than photography. They are beautiful photographs, so their photography skills are high, but it's their knowledge of Global Warming or the tribesmen of the Amazon or some similar specialty that got them there.Chris"
joedlh replied: "Photographers for National Geographic are at the top of their field. Don't expect to get an offer right out of photography school. Look for a job that pays the rent first. Having discouraged you, let me say that there is hope. I attended one of their seminars, which was an excellent orientation to the field. Here is the link to the schedule:. In the one I attended, there was a section for pitching ideas. If they heard something that sounded interesting then they pursued it. They seek the kind of imagery that tells a story. It's not the stuff you can buy in a postcard store. So travel and bring your camera. Look for the unique, rare, or surprising and which conveys an emotion or evokes one in the viewer. Build up your experience. Hone your skills. Be self-critical. A good photographer can get a winning shot with a 3 megapixel camera, while a hack will still get junk from an $8,000 DSLR."
jasonjnagy asked: "I love the travel industry. There's certain feelings I get when traveling to a new place and I want others to feel the same way I do about visiting some place new or experiencing something totally different than what I am use to. I currently work in the travel business advertising vacation property and after seeing how beautiful the land is where some of the properties reside, I get this strong feeling of envy for the owners who get to enjoy the beauty of a vacation destination and of the land their homes rest on. How on earth can I find a job, aside from being a travel agent, or tour director, or cruise ship director, where I can travel to places I love and write about them for everyone else to experience?Im looking along the lines of maybe a travel magazine who will pay people to travel or even a website?"

Adam replied: "The travel writing industry is a very hard one to break into. If you have good background credentials, especially in writing/journalism, it doesn't hurt to try. Apply with National Geographic or Lonely Planet. They're both good companies."
catherine i replied: "Hi from France !Perhaps you must create your own website ? Go on the forums too... ( it's free)Catherine."
scientician82 asked: "I am travelling to Syndey this weeked for a holiday from Brisbane. Should I get travel insurance? I have private health insurance. I don't think it is necessary. I have had travel insurance before but this was for overseas travel."
Question posted courtesy of:
iansand9876 replied: "I never get travel insurance for domestic travel. My household contents insurance covers lost or stolen stuff, and my health insurance covers health problems."
cass replied: "One major thing that your health insurance won't cover though is problems with the airline/flight. For example, one trip from Melbourne - Gold Coast couldn't take off because of flooding on the Gold Coast. All that the airline could offer was a flight 2 days later or a credit. My travel insurance picked up the difference (about $350 extra) to change to a different airline and fly into Brisbane later that day.Other things to consider, if you get sick while you're away or even before you are due to go and you can't fly on the day you have booked, if you don't give 24 hours notice you won't be able to change your date on discounted tickets and you then have to forfeit your ticket and buy a new one for when you are well enough. Travel insurance would cover this.Mind you, there are many people out there who don't take insurance for domestic trips, I guess it comes down to whether you have to money to cover it if something goes wrong...."

In today's high-tech camera world, photographs become sharper and sharper and the goal to recreate an exact duplicate of what the eye sees. Yet, we are fascinated by old photographs, lured by softened tones and images that portray a world gone by. You can give your photographs a nostalgic look without traveling backwards through time.

My search for a good travel blanket came out of sheer necessity... Why are airplane cabins are so hot and stuffy when you're on the ground then frigid during the flight itself?
